Celebrating Diwali - 8th Nov'24

Celebrating Diwali

During the afternoon of 8th Nov'24, all the children came to together to celebrate, a festival shared in Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism. After a short introduction about the Festival by the Headteacher, the children broke up into 5 mixed age groups - with Yr.R being accompanied and supported throughout by their Yr.4 buddies (it's always great to create opportunities for our children to work together across the age-barrier) and embarked upon a carousel of short activities.

Across the sessions, the children learned about / participated in:

- creating Rangoli Patterns
- singing Diwali songs
- creating Henna Hand-art
- making Diwali lanterns
- joining a Diwali dance workshop

The Children learned that the word Diwali means 'rows of lighted lamps'. It is celebrated by Hindu people across the world. Diwali is known as the 'festival of lights' because houses, shops and public places are decorated with small oil lamps called 'diyas'.

Diwali always falls some time between October and November, but the exact date varies each year as the Hindu calendar is based on the Moon. This year we celebrated it on the 8th Nov'.

When asked if they enjoyed the festival, the children replied:

"I enjoyed the lights and the dances because they were beautiful. I could see that they made everyone happy."

"I learned that Diwali is celebrated by the whole family - the whole family eat together."

"I enjoyed all the afternoon, particularly making the Diwali lanterns - it's like arts and crafts."

"This afternoon I learned that the Rangoli patterns are made of flower petals, sand and coloured powder."

"Learning about Diwali is important - its their celebration so we need to celebrate with them."

"It's important that we learn about other people's traditions so that we can visit other countries"

When asked if the children could see any links or similarities between Diwali and some of our Christian Festivals, they replied:

"You give gifts to your family."

"You celebrate with your family."

"You make decorations to put in your house."
"You share a special meal together."

"You sing and dance."
